How to properly throw a disc golf.

At this point in the time you have either done one of two things. You could have either of A) Went out there like a real man and attempted to play; however, failed miserably because you were not quite able to grasp the concept of throwing a heavy dinner plate toward a basket of chains or B) feared the upcoming embarrassment of going out there and trying it like a real man so you just ended up sitting on your computer watching old episodes of That’s 70′s Show.

Here is a great instructional video to teach you to throw like a disc golf pro:

What is disc golf?

Chances are you have heard or been told about the sport of disc golf. Now as you sit back and think about what you’ve been told you only ask your self one thing. What is this game? Disc golf is a sport played by many in the Americas; however, it is not limited here. The game is available all over the entire world! The great thing about it is the lack of restrictions! The only things you really need to play is a course, a few discs, and yourself!

So how exactly do you play?

So let’s say you have your minimum requirements to play disc golf and you are ready to get out there and do work! You grab all your friends, your bag, and get to the course; however, you have no idea what you are doing! Well, you can’t be all talk and no game! The game is played as simply as, well, golf. The fewer points you have, the better. This is not Pac-Man, so getting over five hundred is a huge no no! Every time you throw your disc you count it as a stroke. Strokes add up, so in order to get the best score, you get it in the basket in the lowest amount of throws possible.

BUT HOLD UP.

How do we throw it? What the heck is a “basket?” What is Pac-Man?

If you don’t know Pac-Man, you really need to visit your child hood again. However, all the other questions can be answered quickly.

Throwing.

When throwing the disc you need to realize that it is technically a Frisbee.  When making your drive, which is your first throw on a hole, you need to step back. Side step while facing toward the side, and fling your arm to create power. Right before the end of the swing you should throw your wrist forward and stop. To become accurate you need to flick your wrist and let go in the direction you want it to go. Keeping the throw straight is the hardest thing to do in most peoples’ opinion.  You must keep your wrist parallel with the ground. More importantly keep the disc parallel. If you tilt it either direction, the side of the disc pointing down will go in that direction. This takes practice. The sport takes practice; as does any sport. Now what exactly are we throwing these discs at?

The Basket.

The basket is known by many names. Satan’s basket. The !@#$%^& Basket. And so on. Why such hateful names? Only because this non-moving pole with a basket in the middle connected with chains will be your source of anger management when you start out this sport. It was definitely mine.

Look at him. Just sitting there. Calling you names.
Look at him. Just sitting there. Calling you names.

So now you have more of an idea of the sport. Go out there and see what all you can do!
I believe in you!
